June 2016
So, we went to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. What a lovely, hot, snake filled place. The snakes were not only slithered on the ground, but also walked on two legs, and in uniforms.
We bought a house when we first got there. We figured that like Ft. Lewis, we would be there long term, and it made sense. The first house that we looked at out of several was the one that we ultimately chose to buy. It was just down the block from the kids school, and just outside the main gate.
Life settled down back into our routines. I thought that we were happy. I apparently was an idiot.
Due to the position that Steve held in the band, he traveled a lot doing recruiting shows. These were often smaller ensembles such as the Jazz band or the Brass choir. It had always been part of his job so I didn’t really think much of it. Doesn’t mean I liked it, but, such was the life of an Army wife
He had a short trip to make on our anniversary that year- it was our 11th. He went to Minnesota with the Jazz band, I think. on a recruiting trip. He obviously drank a lot while he was gone. Not that that was anything new or different, most of the band members were alcoholics. He had a hangover when he came home, again nothing out of the ordinary. Seemed to me like it had just been a run of the mill trip. This was the end of Oct.
In January, He asked if we could stop by and drop off some toilet paper at a squad members house. We had just left Walmart and had stocked up (at his insistence). He claimed that his squad member was broke and with two small kids in the house it was necessary. I love kids, so he knew that was a selling point for me. Of course we stopped and he went in and dropped it off. I didn’t really think anything of it. He was a squad leader looking out for his men.
Shortly after, he told me he wanted a divorce. I was blindsided. I asked if there was someone else. He denied it. Said he was just unhappy, under stress and depressed. I tried everything I could to help him and to save our marriage, but soon he was rude to me or distant and ignoring the kids. Finally I kicked him out. He told me he would be staying at his friend’s house, gave me the number and left.
A couple of nights later, the kids and I were coming back from dinner when we happened to pass that house where we had dropped off the TP. Steve’s truck was outside. I said something about daddy visiting his friend and the daughter said that was where his girlfriend lived and she thought she was rude. I was flabbergasted. I asked the daughter if she was sure. She was. Seems dad took her there one of the times they were out on a daddy /daughter day. Guess he wanted her to get to know the girlfriend and her two kids.
He took my daughter to meet his girlfriend while we were still living together, before I even knew there was a problem in our marriage!
When we got home, I called his friend that he was supposedly staying with. Steve apparently forgot to tell him he was staying there.
Then I called his girlfriend’s house, and the shit hit the fan!
