Day Two

So second day on the big ass ship.

Still seasick, just not as bad.

Let me tell you that considering how much we paid for this trip, it absolutely suck to spend it trying not to throw up. Well, usually not quite that bad.

Unless the swells are like 10+ feet tall. And they have been for a good share of the day.

Is this working for me? Not really.

There is so much that I want to do, and not staying in my room is at the top of that list.

Unless I am working on my dissertation, which is just not happening.

The food is wonderful! And if you eat in one of three different ‘restaurants,’ it’s a great price- FREE! Actually, it is covered in the cost of everything.

We have a steward that is basically begging us to clean our room. No- not because we are making a mess, at least not that anyone else can see. It seems like he just really likes his job.

Personally, I hate to clean. I recognize that it is necessary, but I hate it.

I worked as a motel maid for a few months, and it was a few months too long.

What people will do and leave in a room is mind-blowing! At least I never had a room that was classified as a crime site. Which did happen at the hotel.

But back to the cruise.

It rained for most of the day. Grey and stormy.

The boat goes up, then down with a side-to-side thrown in.

We are on the main floor, down a ‘Shining’ length hall. I swear that if I see a set of twins, I’m jumping!

Seriously, the hall is very long. We are on the end of the hall. Around two short corners is one of the elevator banks. There are at least three separate banks. Aft, mid, and bow of the ship. Problem is I HATE elevators on a normal day in a building that is made strictly to stay in one place and NOT sway.

So, let’s take the elevator that I hate on principle anyway and put it in a structure that moves and sways. Yeah, not a recipe that makes me happy. I suppose this is akin to what the elevators in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are described as.

It is terrifying.

I keep asking Mr. Former Navy if this can get worse. He tells me ‘no unless’….

Any statement that has a caveat is not one I usually like, especially if it means that things can get worse.

Then he tells me stories of the worst weather he sailed through.

Did I mention that he was doing West Pacs, which means that he traveled from Alameda, CA, to Hawaii? Although he did say that the worst swells were around Alaska. We are going as far as Vancouver BC. So close, but not that close.

Tonight was supposed to be the first ‘Dressy’ night. Dresses, tuxes etc. Maybe a quarter of the passengers got the memo. Or, maybe people just assumed that unless they ate in one of the higher class $$$$ restaurants, they didn’t need to dress up.

We did. I bought a dress and new shoes. Don bought suit jacket, pants, belts and shoes. Now understand, we are NOT formal people. We are perfectly happy in sweats and concert t-shirts. But, we made the effort.

And I felt like … I don’t know, but out of place.

Plus, my shoes were as comfortable as they possibly could be without being stilettos. We finished dinner and headed out to go somewhere, and I rerouted us back to the room to ditch the shoes. I ended up taking them off when I reached the hallway.

A lady stopped and clapped and said, “Yeah, that’s what I want to do too, I never wear heels anymore!”

I just laughed and told her to go for it.

We never actually left the room again.

Not because of any fun reason just because I was over it. Hung up my (new) sparkly sequin dress and vegged. Technically, I was trying to work on my dissertation. As I said earlier, it’s just not happening.

Having said that, It’s time for me to either get back to it or go to sleep.

We dock in San Francisco in the morning. Another place I have never been. I am excited to go. As well as just stand on something that doesn’t sway for a while.

I, know, life goals.
